A veterinary physiotherapist assesses and treats how an animal moves. They help with pain, stiffness and weakness, recovery from injury or surgery, neurological problems, conditioning for sport and work, and keeping older animals comfortable. Treatment can include hands-on therapy, exercises, and equipment such as laser, electrotherapy or hydrotherapy, often with a home programme you continue between sessions. In South Africa, veterinary physiotherapists must be registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).

Vet physios work alongside your vet rather than replacing them. If your animal is injured, lame, in pain or recovering from surgery, see your vet first so the problem is diagnosed, and let the vet physio know who your vet is. Some vet physios ask for a referral or your vet's details before treating, so it's worth asking when you get in touch. If your animal is in pain or it's an emergency, contact your vet straight away.

Many can. Mobile vet physios bring their equipment to your home, stable or yard, which is often easier for horses and for animals that find travelling stressful. Others see patients in a clinic, and some do both. Each profile shows whether the practice offers mobile visits, clinic visits or both, and roughly how far they travel.
